Border Reivers

Border Reivers were raiders along the Anglo–Scottish border from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Their ranks consisted of both Scottish and English families, and they raided the entire border country without regard to their victims' nationality. Their heyday was perhaps in the last hundred years of their existence, during the time of the Stewart Kings in Scotland and the Tudor Dynasty in England. To defend themselves against the Reivers, the Baron's and Lord's built impressive fortified houses, and these have been listed in detail in the "Explore the Location" of the website. The Manor was built long after the Reiver's ceased to exist, and was built in the style of a Manor. As time passed and there was no need for heavy fortifications, the houses and castles focussed more on their architectural appeal, and beauty. Floors Castle close by in one excellent example of development of the post Reiver era.
