The historic village of Jedburgh dates as far back as the 9th Century, and indeed drips with history. The history of the village is recorded at the 19th Century Jedburgh Castle Jail, built where the original Jedburgh Castle used to stand. But this is the least of the historic buildings. You can also visit the architecturally significant remains of Jedburgh Abbey, first built in the 12th Century by David I of Scotland to show his dominance of the borders. The village is also linked to Mary Queen of Scots, who would come to Jedburgh to secretly meet with her lover. The house where she stayed has become a Mary Queen of Scots Museum. Beautiful Monteviot House with its extensive gardens are also nearby, not to mention a Donkey Sanctuary, and of course charming cafes and boutiques to browse.
